1. Take time to look at the player, and match it up with what they are selling. Are you looking at a level one player trying to sell you a 100 super socketed item? Perhaps they`re just on their vendor, but be suspicious. Most scammers use a new account, and a new character to get your items. Once they have it, theyll delete the character.
2. Do not ever do item trades in the market. Seriously. The chance for you to get scammed is insanely high.
3. Most people like trading versus the shopping mats; it`s quicker, and you get a better price. So, announce what you are selling, or looking for. If you get a buyer or seller, try these things out:
Send them a whisper, and tell them you want to go to one of the shopping matts, suggest one of the far away ones (they are the cheaper ones).
Have them, or you (who ever has the item) put it up on vendor for the agreed price; gold or ep. If you want to be very fair; tell them to up the price for the amount of the matt. (Always remember to check yourself what the rental price is)
This way, if you or him has upped the price, all you have to do, is walk away.
Are you trading items for items? Don`t. Seriously. Take the time to set up a vendor, and get the max amount of gold or ep the current market will allow. Take your gold/ep and buy what you were looking to trade for. Then, do the matt thing.
This way, you have protected yourself, and the other player. In an honest trade, both parties are going to have a concern about being scammed. Most people will not have a problem with a safe vendor trade. If they do; assume they`re a scammer, and refuse to do business with them.
This is the best way to earn a wonderful reputation for being a fair trader, and I honestly believe in no time, you will be "known" for your great trading practices.
And the best advice; if a trade seems too good to be true; it is. Ask yourself, what the angle is, and what this person could stand to get away with.
I hope this helps.
